Each year, the Resident Teacher Program seeks out talented individuals who have excelled in their previous endeavors and are dedicated to raising student achievement in challenged schools.

In order to comply with regulations set forth by the Maryland State Department of Education, prospective Resident Teachers must meet the following requirements:

  • Have a Bachelor's Degree earned by May 2011 to enter the 2011-2012 program (international degrees must be conferred by a country whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S.; transcripts must be evaluated by an International Evaluation Service with a course-by-course description.)
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.75 (for the credits of required content)
  • Be a U.S. citizen, or a permanent resident with a valid Green Card
  • Speak English fluently
  • Submit passing scores on Praxis I and Praxis II by April 30, 2011 for the 2011-2012 program.

Participants who desire to teach in high school must have 30 semester hour credits in the subject area they would like to teach. You must have a 2.75 in these 30 semester hours. (We do not accept applicants for certification in business education or social studies.)

Participants who desire the elementary school certificate must have at least 6 semester hour credits in the areas of math, science, social studies and English with a total of 36 semester hours of content. You must have a 2.75 in these 36 semester hours. The state considers social studies to be history, political science, economics and geography.

All participants are required to pass all parts of the Praxis I test, or meet the composite score of 527, with scores reported in writing before the start of training program.

In place of Praxis I, Maryland will accept the following options from candidates:

  • SAT taken after 2005, combined math and critical reading scores of 1100;
  • SAT taken between 4/95 and 2005, math and verbal composite score of 1100;
  • SAT taken prior to 4/95, math and verbal score of 1000;
  • ACT composite score of 24;
  • GRE math and verbal composite score of 1000.

    Participants are required to pass the Praxis II content test in the area in which they consider themselves eligible to teach, with scores reported in writing before the start of the training program.

    Candidates are encouraged to sign up for the appropriate Praxis tests immediately, as testing dates are limited. Candidates are responsible for the cost of taking the Praxis I and Praxis II tests, which generally averages $225 total per applicant.

    The Praxis I test can be taken on the computer at either the University of Maryland (301-314-0319) or at any Prometric Testing Center.

    Praxis II tests must be taken through Educational Testing Services, which requires registering for the appropriate test well in advance. Please visit the ETS website at www.ets.org/praxis for more specific details about Praxis I and II registration and test dates, as well as online study materials.

    A Maryland library card gives you free access to Learning Express, which has two timed practice Praxis I and Praxis II tests: http://www.learnatest.com/LEL/index.cfm/?HR=http://www.hclibrary.org

    We recommend obtaining a study guide from either your local library, bookstore or ETS online at www.ets.org/praxis.
